History

Palace Hotel & Spa Buxton has been a significant part of the town's landscape since the 19th century. Designed by architect Henry Currey, who worked for the 7th Duke of Devonshire, the building was created during a period when Buxton was developing into one of Britain's best-known spa towns.

Its position overlooking the railway station made the hotel particularly convenient for visitors arriving in Buxton and it became known for its impressive architecture, landscaped grounds and large ballroom.

The building also played a role during both World Wars. During the First World War it was used by Canadian forces as a camp and hospital, while during the Second World War parts of the hotel were used by the British civil service.

Today, the Palace retains much of its historic character while providing bedrooms, dining, leisure and spa facilities alongside spaces for weddings, conferences and other events.
