The Grand National Is Finally Here

Racing-Track

The Grand National is back and better than ever! This April, we will see the best names in the equestrian world take to Aintree Racecourse and battle it out in a race of skill, timing, and speed. If you are planning on attending, instead of scouring the internet for hotels, we already have the perfect place!

What is the Grand National?

Arguably the most famous horse race in the world, the Grand National, annually held at Aintree Racecourse, is a steeplechase race run by a maximum of 40 horses. These athletic horses sprint across four miles of land, leaping over some 30 fences throughout the course with their jockeys astride their back.

The victorious jockey is awarded with a generous prize of over £550,000, as well as international fame and glory, usually leading to further sponsors and success in the field.

One of the most famous names in the Grand National is Red Rum. Red Rum won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977, hailing him the most successful horse in the history of the sport. In 2018 and 2019, another outstanding mare, known as Tiger Roll, hit the track and consecutively took the title. Tiger Roll was on route to equal Red Rum’s historic triple win; however, he was retired in 2022, eliminating any hope of standing in the same glory as Red Rum.

When is the Grand National?

The main Grand National steeplechase begins at 5:15pm on Saturday 15 April. However, there are 14 other races spread throughout all of Thursday and Friday. So, why not stay for the whole event and create some amazing memories?

The second day of the event is labelled as Ladies Day. On this day, ladies typically dress in formal and stylish attire, wearing lavish, high-fashion hats. Despite the steeplechase not occurring until the next day, Ladies Day is usually the busiest day of the horse racing world.

Where can I stay?

The Adelphi Hotel is a stunning hotel that sits in the heart of the bustling city of Liverpool. It is only a short 20-minute drive away from Aintree Racecourse.

If you are wanting to make it a great day and have some drinks at the races, Lime Street train station is across the road from the Adelphi Hotel. You can get on a train to Aintree station and then take the quick seven-minute walk from there to the races. It takes around 30 minutes to get from the Adelphi to Aintree Racecourse.

There are a range of rooms available, so you can pick the best one for your trip. You can book a single, double, twin, triple or even a suite, if you’re feeling like splashing out a bit. All our rooms are on offer for affordable prices with the option to include a bed and breakfast option. You can also opt for a cancellable booking, which allows you to change your plans up until 2pm on the day of your expected arrival.

The Adelphi Hotel is a glorious building with rich history, but don’t just take our word for it, you can get it from the horse’s mouth, literally. In Match of 1954, American performer Roy Rogers stayed at the Adelphi and was visited by non-other than his own horse, Trigger. During his visit, Trigger appeared on an outside balcony, welcomed by 4,000 adoring fans and reporters. Both legendary cowboy Roy Rogers and the terrific Trigger found the Adelphi Hotel to be a worthy place to stay, so why not give it try yourself?
