History
The Adelphi Hotel has been part of Liverpool's history for almost 200 years. The original Adelphi opened on this site in 1826 by James Radley, before being rebuilt in 1876 and again in 1914. Today's Grade II listed Edwardian building remains one of Liverpool's most recognisable landmarks, combining impressive architecture with a long tradition of welcoming visitors to the city. Since joining Britannia Hotels in 1982, the hotel has undergone extensive restoration while also preserving many of its historic features.
During the early 20th century, the Adelphi became one of Britain's most prestigious hotels, serving wealthy passengers travelling on transatlantic ocean liners from the Port of Liverpool, including those sailing aboard the RMS Titanic. At the time, the hotel was considered one of the most modern in the country, offering facilities such as an indoor swimming pool, Turkish baths, tennis and squash courts, fine dining restaurants and telephones in every guest room.
Over the years, the Adelphi has welcomed many notable guests, including Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill, Harold Wilson, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Bob Dylan, Roy Rogers and Cilla Black. During the Second World War, the hotel narrowly escaped damage during the Liverpool Blitz, further adding to its remarkable history.
Today, the Adelphi remains one of Liverpool's best-known hotels, admired for its grand Edwardian interiors, sweeping staircases and unique heritage. Its central location and historic character continue to make it a popular choice for visitors looking to experience one of the city's most iconic buildings.
