How You Can Celebrate World Wildlife Day

Squirrel

Each year, we celebrate all the wonderful wildlife around us in a day named, World Wildlife Day. In 2013, the United National General Assembly (UNGA) declared that there should be an annual reminder of the responsibility we have to protect and preserve the already dwindling wildlife around us. For almost a decade now, 3 March has been the date for which we come together to raise awareness to how our actions can negatively impact the lives and habitats of wildlife and how to best protect what is left.

This years theme for World Wildlife Day is “safeguarding key species for ecosystem restoration”. Taking data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it is thought that over 8,400 species of wild fauna and flora are currently critically endangered. Additionally, some 30,000 species are also labelled as vulnerable or endangered.

The official World Wildlife Day website details that we must “drive the debate towards the imperative need to reverse the fate of the most critically endangered species, to support the restoration of their habitats and ecosystems and to promote their sustainable use by humanity”.
