Castles
The British Royal Family's summer home Balmoral Castle lies in the beautiful scenery of Royal Deeside, purchased by Queen Victoria in 1848, the 50'000 acre estate has been a firm favourite of the royals ever since. The estate offer fantastic scenery and wildlife as well as guided tours of this magnificent castle.
You can
also take part on the Castle Trail where you can
visit one or more of the 70 castles in the Grampian
highlands....this is definately Castle Country! A particular
highlight is the ruined Dunnottar
Castle set in stunning scenery, and located roughly 2 miles
south of Stonehaven. This earliest existing
buildings date from roughly the 13th century. This site is now
open to the public during the summer months.
William Wallace
Aberdeen also features a statue of William Wallace, the Scottish Knight famous for leading a resistance during the Wars of Scottish independence. Aberdeen was one of the locations where his limbs were displayed after he had been captured and then hung, drawn and quartered.
